Mary Bauermeister

I am very glad I was able to visit the gardens and the house where Mary Bauermeister, a German artist, stages her art and where she used to live. The wonderful gardens with the artist huts, the scenery, the artwork and the whole architecture and setting of the house is really capturing and mesmerizing.

First time I was there I hardly wanted to leave and was deeply touched by it´s intense beauty and the deep impression it made on me.

The beloved monstera

As you might already have noticed: My most favourite plant - the monstera deliciosa. Can´t get tired of watching and loving it. Preferably in the morning with my first cup oft tea. Got this one you see on the photograph approximately in 1997. Gave it to my friends when I moved town. Friends gave it back to me when they moved overseas. Meanwhile 3 times the size since when I first got it. New leaf growing this morning. To be continued....

The end of september and the beginning of october was so "indian summer" and I loved it a lot. Now I can hardly understand that I am sitting here with my woolen jumpers on, and see the leaves falling - but at least there is clear blue sky and sunshine which is nice.

The Net & Ball carpet

I have just visited London and I was glad to see the ‘Net and Ball’ carpet live - The ‘Net and Ball’ design was originally designed for the carpet in the Royal Festival Hall in London, which opened in 1951 for the Festival of Britain. Peter Moro and Leslie Martin are the architects of the hall, and they also designed the carpet. The pattern is an abstract version of a square wave seen with the aid of an oscilloscope – a visual representation of sound. The ‘net’ or sound wave had already been created by Moro. The design was completed with the ‘ball’ by Leslie Martin, who was inspired by an apple he had on his desk at the time.

You can get the wallpaper with the "Net and Ball" design in the shop of the Southbank Centre.

Green village Bali

There is this wonderful beauty and serenity in this architecture and interior of the Green Village: A Green Residential Community . Green Village is established by the artisans and craftsmen that built Green School about which I already posted some time ago. So I was even more happy to see further dreamlike buildings which are made out of bamboo. I would love to go there and stay for a while.

Peter Vetsch - Earth Houses

Peter Vetsch is a Switzerland based architect who is building Earth Homes since the year of 1974 (!) and during that time he has built 47 earth homes so far, and there are more to come. I am quite happy to see Earth Homes grow in Europe, too and I do also love the architecture and the philosophy about it, which is best descibed by a quote from their website :" The curvy forms of the earth-houses are an ideal synthesis between form and function. The emotional archaic form is an hommage to the natural environment. Planning should be centered around mankind, making the house his 3rd skin in context with nature. " We could totally agree with that I guess.

Michael Reynolds Earthships

Michael Reynolds is an architect who is the creator and founder of the so-called earthships. Since three decades he is using recycled materials to build self-sufficient and off-the-grid housing. What other people call waste, Michael Reynolds calls raw material for sustainable living. He feels that these Earthships are not only homes but can be seen as symbolic ships that sail on the seas of tomorrow.

Just recently I discovered Jason de Caires Taylor’s underwater sculptures. They are astonishing underwater artworks which create a unique, absorbing and expansive visual seascape. While highlighting natural ecological processes, Taylor’s interventions explore the complex relationships that exist between art and environment. His works become artificial reefs which are attracting marine life. Would love to go there and explore everything myself in this dreamlike underwater seascape.

Lotte Reiniger - silhouette animator

Lotte Reiniger was a silhouette animator and a great figure in animated film. Born in 1899 in Berlin, she used a specific animation technique and took the ancient art of shadow-plays. Her art is still lush and beautiful to watch in films like "Prince Achmed", and is fascinating mankind over many decades.

Since the end of the 50ies, Pascal Haüsermann created organic houses and "bubble houses". He was a great visionary with an utopian point of view. He created new and different architecture for new styles of living.

The Shell Residence by japanese architect Katoro Ide of ARTechnic is this fantastic building you see above. Built in 2008 it is located in the forests of Karuizawa in Nagano, Japan. Love the organic shape and retro -futuristic architecture combined with it´s natural setting.

Toyo Ito´s Meiso no Mori

I just noticed Toyo Ito´s fantastic work of the Meiso no Mori (Forest of Meditation) funeral hall in Kakamigahara City. The project architect, Leo Yokota, describes the guiding image: “Rather than the heavy, dignified architecture usual with crematoria, we imagined a soft place, as if a gentle snowfall had settled lightly upon the site to form a broad and generous roof.”

Kendrick Bangs Kellogg is an architect who believes in organic architecture and creates stunning buildings. The High Desert Home shown above was built near Palm Springs, California.

Details about this house are cited from his website:

"In the high desert on the south slope of a large rock outcropping appears a giant bird from some prehistoric time. 26 gracefully arranged wings of gently curved concrete forms, all resting on cantilevered, shaped, concrete platforms, span up to fifty feet and ten feet across.

This home is designed for energy gains from the thermal mass. The wings are separated by glass to allow for natural light and the various frequencies caused by California earthquakes, and is designed 30% above the highest earthquake standards there are. The on-job design-build details in this home include the specially shaped fine-crafted wood, specially treated steel, individually cast bronze door trim and latches, semi-sand-blasted doors in implied Jurassic designs.

Better than museum quality, there are no better built-in art works in the world. I predict one day this home will be the entrance to the adjacent National desert park. This home is designed for the life style of the owners. To save the natural landscape, the home is separated from the subterranean garage below by a 200 foot rock path that winds up and around the existing boulders. For those who prefer not walking, an electric conveyance carries people and goods up and down the path. The site is thus enhanced by the design."

Free Spirit Spheres

The "Free Spirit Spheres" are set among the tall trees of the west coast rainforest of Vancouver Island, Canada. Built on vision and engineering these handcrafted spheres are suspended like pendants from a web of rope. They occupy a truly unique place in the world while providing a habitat for the un-tamed spirit that exists in us all.

I would love to spend a week or two in one of these lovely spheres, with a lot of fantastic books and being very close to nature.

There is this incredible place the locals call "Timolandia", Tim Sullivan´s house build by himself and Steve Kornher, who is a designer/builder living in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato Mexico and who loves concrete. I stumbled upon his website before and the fantasyland designed houses, sculptures and buildings left me nearly breathless. One day I would love to see them with my own eyes. They inspire me a lot.

Yes - we are nearly there and everyone is about to celebrate the festive season. Apparently I am very inspired by aquariums and the fabulous fish you can watch swimming around. Plus I am absolutely thrilled to show you my brand new ebay finds I bought last week. Well these chairs designed by Alexander Begge are not really new, they are exactly my age to be more precise. I will take proper photographs soon, but just to give you a little black and white impression of my beloved chairs for now. And merry x mas of course ;)

The orange Kartell side tables in the photograph below took a long way around the globe: I happily found them in a St. Vinnies in Sydney for 6 Dollars, and decided they are staying with me, and I still adore them everyday - plus they are quite useful, too :)

Things I always wanted to learn is how to build an organic house. After having lived in the rainforest for 2,5 years and being deeply affected by doing so, I am still thinking a lot about living a more natural life, and living in organic buildings with the big aim of being self sufficient.

The oceanographic museum is located on the waterfront in Stralsund, created by Behnisch architects, opened in 2008.

One of my most favourite architects and also a person I would love to have the opportunity to get to know, is organic architect Javier Senosiain.
His organic houses and vivid creations leave you stunned and full of bliss in a phantasy world of rounded shapes and patterns. Everything you always longed for is materialized in form, shape, space and colour. There is also a little video which I recommend viewing. This is love transformed in a building.

Das Parkhotel

I always had in mind this great and unusual kind of hotel in a tube - somehow it got lost in my link collection, but now it reoccured: I think it is really stylish and worth to stay in for a while, esspecially as it has a quite unusal concept:

dasparkhotel is conceived and implemented primarily as a hospitality tool.

It is constructed from repurposed, incredibly robust drain pipes. The external simplicity surrounds an unexpectedly comfortable interior - full headroom, double bed, storage, light, power, woolly blanket and light cotton sleeping bag. All other hotelery devices (Toilets, showers, minibar, cafe, etc) are supplied by the surrounding public space.

It´s open from May to October, and works with a personal door code you receive when booking online.

The infrastructure is as follows: Because dasparkhotel obtains sanitation, breakfast and other hotel facilities from existing public infrastructure, it is possible for us to work with the very simple, user-friendly "pay as you wish" system. A night in dasparkhotel costs just as much as you can afford or want to pay.

My first mobile phone

In reference to this stylespion article I was thinking about my first mobile phone...these were the days...First I wondered if mobile phones could possibly grow on trees or even grow in a field... but basically I had to find out in these harsh and rough days in history, that in some areas, you even had to enter specially designated areas to even have mobile phone coverage at all...

So within these fond memories I created this photograph above...and state my urgent need of a new mobile phone, as the one shown above is still in use, but due to several malfunctions it has to be delivered to "my-first-mobile-phone-heaven" soon....

I have recently seen this movie and I absolutely loved it - it opens up new visions and shows you how you might love the world a bit more - a great movie about interesting and lovable artists you would like to get to know and spent time with - make art with. Plus music which opens your heart to imagination.

This is a photo collection about beautiful things I came across a while ago and fell instantly in love with. Would love to see more of this sophisticated but loveable typography around (shells). The skippy family as sculptures in front of public buildings bring back nature into the urban city scape. Not to forget about the modernist clock made out of concrete, showing the time in a very elegant and midcentury modern way. And the totally beloved casala chairs by Alexander Begge.

Berlin impressions

This was when I was travelling to Berlin a while ago. Found some fantastic spots while visiting some of the DMY events which were located throughout Berlin. The orchid is there to bloom, give warmth, round and organic shape to the now starting autumn vibes on this part of the hemisphere. Sometimes all you might think of at the moment consists of a sofa, a good book or stylish magazine, and some sort of hot beverage e.g. tea.

A few things you can create with concrete: beautiful walls, or even bigger facades. Been inspired by the curves and special designs. It´s always a good thing to discover new things in cities you have been never been to in your life before.

Created in 1957 for the "Interbau" architects like Oscar Niemeyer, Alvar Aalto, Arne Jacobsen, Egon Eiermann and many more architects created the "Hansaviertel" in Berlin. I was visiting on a sunny and quiet Sunday morning and felt somehow transformed. It´s a fascinating place, with many inhabitants from different backgrounds, all with their own story, living in the "city of tomorrow".

museumotel l´utopie

Look at this fabulous place I´ve found recently, and since I´ve discovered it, I desperately long to go there, stay there for a while and be surrounded and enchanted by its beauty. The museumotel was built in 1967 by architect Pascal Haüsermann. With his vision and and love for utopian forms, he created 9 bubble style bungalows, which are now a museumotel.

Adorable. Lovable. This place sparkles my fantasy and my love to spent some time in utopia! Can´t wait!
